Deep Tan | London
London’s deep tan are kicking off in 2022 as the trio return with intense new single beginners’ krav maga.
A track awash with urgency, the group harbour an irritation at the need for self defence as cases of male violence repeatedly enter the public eye. Demanding in tone, the new single touches on a relatable night time checklist of “keys in a fist”, and waiting for a man to pass by before stepping out in the dark. In its repetitive nature, the band bring into focus the frustration and anxiety felt by womxn as the streets become a source of danger.
On the track, deep tan explain: “‘beginners’ krav maga’ is a response to the idea that womxn should take self defense classes in order to feel safe on the street at night. Womxn shouldn’t have to. Yet it seems like every day there’s a new Sarah Everard, Sabina Nessa or Aisling Murphy. Educate your sons, brothers, guy friends. Male violence against womxn is an epidemic and it needs to stop, so we made a pop song to talk about it”
